Declutter and Defunktify Your Closet All While You Practice Social Distancing

You may have my easy 'Basic 4 Tips' on hand. If not, get it here. They’ll come in handy.

It’s Spring ya’ll!! Time to Spring Clean and you might as well get it done while you’re patiently waiting out “the Corona”. I encourage you to clean with every season change. This way you’re sorting out, editing your inventory, and storaging away what you won’t be wearing anytime soon.

TRY THIS:

  1. PULL OUT your winter wear by placing what you will keep in a pile and what you will donate in another pile. If you cannot access something like Goodwill while on lock down, use ThredUp. Sign up with ThredUp and request bag mailers to mail your donations and sellables. You can leave your sealed bag at your mailbox for your PO person to pick up.

  2. FOLD DOWN your winter wear in drawers to create more hanging space and store away what’s not being worn. I prefer this method. You’ll appreciate seeing all of your clothes in season hanging and you won’t forget (like I tend to) what’s hidden at the bottom of a pile. Other storing options could be to create an off season section of your closet by dividing your closet from one side to another. Or you maybe you’re like my mother and rotate seasonal clothes from closet to the next in your house. Of course you can use bins as well if you have some on hand and can stow them away under your bed, garage, storage room, or above a closet. I like to add fabric sheets and save those silica gel packets things and throw them in the mix to keep it all fresh and dry.

  3. CLEAN AWAY now that a lot of space has been cleared out. Go ahead and vacuum the floor and corners from floor to ceiling. Get them cob webs up outta there. Wipe down all surfaces with a disinfectant spray. If you have metal bars, use fabric sheets or waxed paper to glide over the bars. This helps your hangers (you better not have them wire hangers in that closet!) to push back and forth with ease.

  4. FINAL TOUCHES will be to COLORIZE. This is my favorite part of the process. Keep it simple by using a light to dark color method. I totally get caught up in trying to “Rainbow Brite” my closet. What can I say, it’s therapeutic.

Now grab a glass of wine or kombucha (‘cause I know you need it if you have little ones home from schools being shut down) and just step back and admire your work. Good job, love! I hope this has left you feeling ambitious and wanting to tackle that “at-home-honey-do-list” yourself. I would love to hear about it, so what’s next?
